While recycling is gaining international acceptance, one of the world’s most reusable materials is still being left largely in the trash: hard plastic (High-density polyethylene). Commonly used as detergent bottles and caps, recycled HDPE is stronger than the original material, yet only 16% of this durable plastic is being recycled. That means 84% goes back into the Earth as waste, over 57 million tons a year.
This is where Goodchair comes in.
Goodchair is an international design project that will ignite a new and memorable conversation about HDPE recycling. We will create the next world renowned iconic chair, famous not just for its design but also for being the first chair made from fully recycled HDPE plastic: a beautiful object that will foster a healthier relationship with the plastics in our lives.
We start with an international design competition, organized by the renowned architectural moderator Reed Kroloff, the man previously responsible for administering the highly lauded Highline Competition in Manhattan, along with a variety of other international competitions; competitions that have included the participation of some of the world’s most renowned architects and designers.
Once chosen, the winning design will immediately go into large scale production with a manufacturer of almost exclusively recycled, strengthened plastics products.
A film and TV series, as well as a content rich version of this website, will document both the HDPE problem and tell the story of our international design competition, exploring the issues of plastic recycling, manufacturing and consumption around the globe. An affordable chair, a priceless story.
